People are being advised to stay indoors with the AC on during the heat alert - but what about people who have to work outside?
Some relief could soon be on the way, as part of the city’s new pilot program. They are currently working with specific nonprofits to provide "cool kits" to the city’s estimated 65,000 delivery drivers, outdoor workers and other at-risk groups.
“It’s very hot, it’s very very busy," said a delivery driver who asked to remain anonymous. He continued to explain that not everyone can afford to take a break and stay inside.
Outdoor delivery drivers, construction workers, and day laborers are just some of the people working despite the high temps.
“I just do it. I’m bothered but there’s no sense in complaining. The job's got to get done," said construction worker Emidil Saraiva.
The cool kits include a cooling towel, an ice pack, electrolyte powder and sunscreen.
